DESCRIPTION:
At its heart, the Street Captain program functions as a modern "telephone tree." When there's news that needs to be shared by the Village Board, the Village Manager, the Howard county Police Department or others, the Street Captains serve as points of contact throughout the Village that can help disseminate the news to their neighbors. At the same time, when a resident has a question or concern, they have can turn to their Street Captain who will be "plugged in" to some of the people who can answer that question or concern.
In addition to the two-way communication that Street Captains help to foster, the program is also a resource for resident leaders who want to help build a sense of community on their block or street. Street Captains often serve as the organizers for block parties and other events designed to bring their neighbors together. The Street Captain program seeks to connect these community organizers so they can share best-practices and support each others efforts.
- A street can have more than one Street Captain. In fact, it's better if there are two or more!
- The Street Captain program is supported by the Owen Brown Village Board
- Street Captains and the coordinator of the Street Captain program are all volunteers
- Anyone interested in becoming a Street Captain should e-mail John Boyle.
- Street Captain must consent to having their names, streets and e-mail addresses posted on the Owen Brown website, and shared among residents and other entities connected to the program.
- Street Captains and the coordinator of the Street Captain program can not use the program or associated resources to promote political candidates (local, state or national), organizations or businesses.
